From Good to Great

How many of you know Richard Krajicek? And How many of you know Roger Federer? Usually a significantly more number of people.  Richard Krajicek and Roger Federer have a common achievement - they both have won the Wimbledon. But still everyone knows Roger Federer but only a few can recognise Krajicek. The question is why? Krajicek won the Wimbledon once which is good but Federer has won the Wimbledon a record 9 times which is great. This is the difference between good and great. We all know a lot of good people but great people? Only a handful.

The journey from good to great is perhaps the most coveted one as well as the most difficult one. A lot of people undertake this journey but only a few can make it. Achieving something difficult once is good but achieving it consistently is great. This is what marks out the champions from the ordinary. You don’t win the silver you lose the gold. History will remember that Germany won the football world cup in 2014 but it wouldn’t remember that Argentina came second or the Netherlands team which came third.

Sports is a wonderful place where you will find a clear demarcation between good and great. And one common tool for success which every champion has in his/her locker is hard work. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. Take the example of Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli. Vinod Kambli dare I say was a more talented player than Tendulkar. However, Tendulkar had that fire in the belly; the burning desire to succeed at any cost and not give up which gave him the edge over Kambli. At the end of every practice session when young Tendulkar was absolutely knackered both physically and mentally his coach used to place a coin on the top of his stumps. The challenge was that if Tendulkar wasn’t dismissed, he would get that coin. And Tendulkar always won that coin. It wasn’t the coin which was the reason for renewed vigour rather it was the challenge to get the coin which kept him going.

It is true that winners don’t do different things; they do things differently. The great pioneer Steve Jobs was a prime example of this. Steve Jobs it is said that before any apple product launch followed a 5x5x5 rule. 5 days to create the presentation, 5 days to review, 5 days to practice his delivery. Why do you think a billionaire would spend 15 days in preparing to launch a product? It is because he only believed in being the best and left no stone unturned to achieve his goals. I have often complained about delivering a wonderful speech according to me but still not winning the contest. Forget the 5x5x5 approach; did I even try the 2x2x2 approach? Do you try that? Unfortunately most of us don’t and that is precisely the reason why we all remain good but cannot become great.

Champions do not compete against others, their only competition is themselves. Can I do better than what I did yesterday? Can I jump a little bit higher than I jumped yesterday? Instead of worrying about how the other contestants delivered their speeches in the International Speech contest cannot I ensure that I deliver such a speech which eclipses everyone else’s? How can that be achieved? Persistence to be the best and once you reach that level consistency to do it day in day out. There is no point being a shooting star which will illuminate the sky for a few seconds, instead try to be the brightest star which can be viewed every day.

Yes the path from good to great is tough and there will be countless failures - Thomas Alva Edison after inventing the electric light bulb on the 1001st attempt merely stated that I didn’t fail a 1000 times; I merely found 1000 ways in which the light bulb cannot be made. Do you think history would remember him if he gave up after say the 500th attempt? No. But he kept on plugging away because he did not believe in merely being good, he wanted to be great.

Friends, remember it is your attitude and not your aptitude which will determine your altitude - and once you reach that altitude...simply raise the bar higher because... Sky is the Limit, the Lower Limit

The Ice Breaker

“Can I please take your picture so that I can show Santa what I want for Christmas?”

Please do not think that I am trying to hit upon you; you are way out of my league. What I was trying to do however, was give an example of a pickup line. Fancy phrase pickup line. So what exactly does a pick up line mean to you?  A pick-up line or chat-up line is a conversation opener with the intent of engaging an unfamiliar person for romance, or dating. According to me however it is nothing but an ice breaker between a girl and a guy. A good pick up line doesn’t ensure that things will be all lovey dovey but a bad pickup line will certainly ensure that things become helter skelter.

Like any tasty dish, a tasty pickup line(pun intended) is also made up of certain ingredients - they are C,D and E : Content, Delivery and Evaluate.

First and foremost comes the content - this is like the prepared speech section in Toastmasters. You know the objective - impress someone. The content should be witty and chatty. By chatty I mean something which will ensure that you get a reaction from the audience. A pickup line should not be corny like - “Do you believe in love at first sight or should I walk through the door again” might result in the door being banged on your face. Neither should it be straight forward like “Let’s date because I think we are made for each other”- it never works trust me I am speaking from experience. If you can come up with something humorous then it will do the trick because everyone likes a person who can make them laugh - the politicians and the project managers are an exception. Being original helps and I always believe in the horses for courses thumb rule. Whatever works for one girl won’t work for another. And just in case you cannot think of anything, even a simple hello or hi can do the trick. Remember the motive is to strike up a conversation. A word of caution - I have seen guys trying to wish a girl in a different language like Bonjour in French, Guten Tag in German, Hajimamashite in Japanese etc. Do it at your own peril - if the girl can speak that language and you cannot, then the cat is out of the bag. Another tip is to pay attention to the person or the ambience. The easiest way to start conversation with someone is to speak about the weather but then again if you are in a nightclub it isn’t a good idea to walk up to someone and say “What a beautiful sunny day it is.” Remember your content is the king.

Next comes the clincher - the delivery. It is either going to grab her attention or result in your extinction from her mind. A simple pickup line delivered properly can surpass the best pickup line delivered ordinarily. The delivery is composed of three C’s the first being - Confidence: there is no substitute to confidence when it comes to an ice breaker. Eye contact is a must. Speaking too fast or too slow is a sign of lack of confidence. But always remember - confidence is good, overconfidence is fatal. The next C is conviction - you have to believe in what you are saying. Yes you really don’t mean it when you are saying that “You are really pretty” but you got to deliver that with conviction. Once again shaky voice or avoiding eye contact denotes that you do not believe in what you are saying. The final C - Courage. The school where I studied had the motto - Courage to Know. For a successful pickup line the motto is Courage to Go. This is where 99% of the guys are filtered out or rather chickened out. We all have had an instance in our lives where we see a gorgeous, mind blowing, princess like lady being accompanied by a pauper like guy and you are like... “Lucky dog”. It is infact not a lucky dog but a brave dog. He didn’t fear about rejection and as a result now they are in conjunction.

Finally comes the evaluation part. Now the question might be what are we evaluating? Our mistakes. Yes and no. By evaluation I mean evaluating the response of the person. Every great speaker can feel the pulse of the audience and adapt accordingly. Similarly for a pickup line study the person in front of you. Is she smiling? Yes. Is she smiling because she is impressed or you sound like a joker? Is she frowning? Yes. Where is the nearest exit. Exiting a conversation is another art. If your ice breaker did not go down well with the person in question, leave amicably. The problem with most men are that we have a big ego and we cannot accept rejection in the right spirit. However, not everyone will like you and vice versa but hey we are a species of around 8 billion and even probability gives you a chance greater than zero. So definitely you can be someone’s hero. As Farhan Akhtar had stated in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara “Insaan ka kartavya hota he koshish karna, kamyabi upar wala ke haath mein he” We can only try and do our best, rest is our fate.

Dear friends, a pickup line is just like a speech in Toastmasters. Sometimes prepared, sometimes impromptu. Do not use it as with an intention to flirt even though the intention is to flirt. Consider it as a light hearted conversation starter and go with the flow.

Romeo Must Die

Romeo settled down in his seat and drew a deep breath. The day is here, finally. The day he has been waiting for the past five years.
“Relax! Take a deep breath. Don’t be nervous” - he told himself. The same words were uttered by his mother sixteen years ago as they were sitting outside a psychologist’s chamber. “Mom am I a freak?” - Romeo had asked, his voice trembling. “You are a gift from GOD” - smiled his mother as she kissed him on the forehead.
Raised by a single mother, Romeo was just like another young man who dreamed to rule the world one day. He visited the nearby kindergarten and it was here that the world realised : Romeo wasn’t any ordinary kid - he had a gift. He could make things disappear; no he wasn’t any sorcerer, neither was he someone from the pages of Marvel comics. Rather he possessed a rare gift - a gift of hallucinating people into believing that things don’t actually exist. Labelled as a trickster, a devil and what not, Romeo’s young mind failed to fathom why was he a subject of so much hatred? Little did he realise - what was ordinary for him was extraordinary for others. His mom refused to believe the school authorities when they told her - you have given birth to a devil. Instead she took him away from the hustle and bustle of the city to the suburbs.
As Romeo started growing up he began to realise the full extent of the power he possessed. However, he didn’t know how to control it. Part of the reason being his unfathomable anger - anger stemming from the weird glances people cast on him, anger stemming from not being accepted by the society, anger stemming from anger. His mother tried to pacify him a lot. But one day when Romeo created havoc by vanishing an entire house after a petty fight; his home was pelted with stones and his mother was publicly humiliated. Romeo couldn’t take it and his anger reached a tipping point - he shot dead two people. It was no longer child’s play, but a serious crime. Somehow they managed to escape; but they were on the run and had to go underground for a considerable period of time.
It was during this time that Romeo’s mother took him to Dr. Stephen’s clinic to control his rage - “Mom am I a freak?” - Romeo had asked, his voice trembling. “You are a gift from GOD” - smiled his mother as she kissed him on the forehead. Dr. Stephen realized very soon that sitting in front of him was a genius - an uncut diamond. Slowly but surely his sessions started shaping Romeo’s life. The father whom Romeo had missed throughout his life started taking shape in the form of Stephen. He became a friend, philosopher and guide. Stephen introduced him to the world of Christopher Nolan, the Wachowski brothers, Derren Brown and others. Suddenly Romeo didn’t feel alone in this world; there were other people like him. He was NOT a FREAK! A feeling of relief engulfed him and he finally managed to smile..after years.
“Would you like to have something?” - the young lady’s voice punctured Romeo’s thoughts. “Can I get a glass of scotch?” - a toast to my impending success he murmured to himself and  took stock of the surroundings, a young man of Asian origin, who seemed to be in his teens was sitting next to him and texting his mother. Romeo was going to see his mother too before the day ended. He looked out of the window to bask in the beauty of the day. It was a day like this only.
It was a day like this only when Romeo reached Dr. Stephen’s chamber. Life was good and he was soon going to end his sessions with Stephen. Stephen spoke about the power of the subconscious mind on that day and as always wowed Romeo with his words. He is a superman - Romeo thought to himself. The clock struck 4pm; and as Romeo got up to leave Stephen asked him to stay back. Today being the last session Romeo did not mind. A part of him actually wanted the sessions to continue. Stephen told him about the greatest illusion of all : the illusion called love and how it engulfs the mind which is then controlled by the heart. “Never ever let your heart rule your head son” - said Stephen.
A strange way to end the sessions - Romeo thought as he reached home. The door of his home was unlocked; mom is getting old! “Mother” - shouted Romeo but no one answered. That’s strange...Romeo entered the house amidst an eerie silence. And then he saw it - his mother, the very reason for his existence was lying lifeless in a pool of blood. Fear overcame the initial shock - this..this cannot be true. Romeo shook his mother hysterically hoping against hope that she will wake up. But the hands which had fed him since birth didn’t rise, the lips which had sung him to sleep didn’t twitch, the eyes which had looked at him with endless love..didn’t blink. Romeo fainted.
A dark room, a big room is where Romeo woke up many hours later. Mother! - the first thought came to his mind and he tried to sit up. But he felt a searing pain in his arm. He was in a hospital it seemed and he was receiving a drip. He heard the door creak and quickly closed his eyes. He didn’t want to face anyone. “How is he now?” - it was Stephen. “He is ok now but in a deep shock. We have given him sedatives.” - replied a lady, presumably a doctor. “Stephen - he should never know. I have your word? “ - asked another voice. “Yes minister you have my word. I will coax him to use his gifts for serving our country. We all need to make sacrifices. The heart cannot rule the head”.
Long after the visitors had left, Romeo opened his eyes. So this is what it was all about, he was a catch, a weapon for the government. His mother was killed so that Stephen had a free control over him. Stephen - the person whom he considered to be a father figure turned out to be a traitor. Tears rolled down Romeo’s eyes, he felt helpless and scared. He was alone in this world...he was merely an object to be used by a few people. Slowly fear was overcome with something else...vengeance...anger...hatred. The reason why Stephen came into his life, the anger which Stephen worked so hard to curb consumed Romeo.
Romeo escaped from the hospital. He did not know where to go but he knew he needed time. Thanks to his mother, he had enough money to survive for a few days. Romeo left for a nearby town where he took up a job in a small pub. It suited him well, no one knew him and he had grown a beard along with a spate of tattoos on his face to camouflage himself.  It was from here that he started plotting his revenge. He had a gift according to his late mother. He was going to use it to devastating effect. He was going to change history.
Stephen searched for Romeo frantically. He wanted to be with Romeo at his hour of grief. But the boy had disappeared. Romeo’s mother was killed by the same people whom Romeo had shot at during his childhood days. A police investigation would have resulted in opening a can of worms and subsequent punishment for Romeo. But Stephen loved the boy like his own son. He used his contacts to reach out to an influential minister. Romeo would work for the government and use his GOD given gifts to serve the country. To clear Romeo of any misdeeds a small price needed to be paid. Government records will show Romeo is dead. Stephen found this arrangement to be logical. “We all need to make sacrifices. The heart cannot rule the head”.
But where is Romeo?
The minister wasn’t best pleased with Stephen and had even threatened Stephen with dire consequences. The secret of Romeo was a risk to him and the deal which he had stuck with Stephen now seemed like a bad idea. Things needed to be corrected before they went out of hand. His reputation was at stake. Stephen must die. Romeo Must Die!
Meanwhile, Romeo had found a new ally - the Joker from the movie Dark Knight. He started identifying himself with the maniacal character. Yes..just like the joker he was misunderstood, just like the joker no one loved him, just like the joker people just wanted to use him. Romeo concurred with Alfred’s words from the movie : “Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn!” He wanted to watch the world burn. Romeo knew what he needed to do and the consequence of his actions - Romeo Must Die!
Dr. Stephen was found dead in his clinic. Initial probe points to suicide, the reasons are still unknown - read the newspaper headline. Romeo read and re-read the news. A plethora of emotions swept through his mind - was he happy? no. Was he sad? He couldn’t be. Stephen is dead, thats one less head I need to chop off now. But who was Romeo fighting against? The society, the government or himself? I am fighting against everyone. Everyone should pay he said to himself. But why make innocents suffer? “The heart cannot rule the head!” . But he needed a way…and he found one. The man had come to his pub for a drink. He was going to meet his family soon and was very happy about it. He told Romeo about his travel plans. Right at that moment Romeo knew what he had to do. He had found his way to be heard, to be noticed. His revenge would be complete in the most beautiful yet horrific way.
“Sir, here’s your scotch. Wish you a wonderful journey.” smiled the beautiful lady and left. Romeo gulped down the scotch in one go. He was ready to make history. The journey had already started and everyone was preparing to sleep. Romeo smirked.

“This is your captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah welcoming you aboard Malaysian Airlines flight MH370. We wish you all a happy and a safe journey. Good night”

Hands Shake!!

Over the many centuries of human existence, many social customs have emerged out of both necessity and leisure. The handshake is one custom that encompasses both of those origins. The handshake may appear little more than a formality to some, but to others it is a complete view into the personality of the person on the other end of the handshake. The handshake has also created nations and bought homesteads. However, in all cases it still requires two people to be executed correctly, thus causing an interaction to take place. Today I am going to discuss about the various types of handshakes.
Types of Handshakes:
  1. The Bone Crusher: The sole purpose of this type of handshake is to cause you pain. The kind of handshake exchanged by Manchester United and Liverpool captains before the match begins.

  1. The Politician: Using both hands to grasp the other persons hand for handshake. The tube well hand shake.

  1. The never let go:
The type of handshake where one person forgets the fact that he/she is holding onto the hand of the other person. They consider 'your' hand to be 'their' property.

  1. The dominating type: The type of handshake which Hrithik Roshan used in the movie “Kaho Na Pyar He”. Indicates that the person intends to dominate you. Statutory warning for guys, never try this type of handshake with your girlfriend. You will be rejected in the blink of an eye. On a serious note the best way to deal with someone who tries this type of handshake is to take their hand and then gently turning it and make it straight. This will let the other person know that you both are in the same level.

  1. The touch me not: The type of handshake where one person is dead against touching the other person’s hand. It is as if the handshake has been forced upon him/her.
My fellow Toastmasters, why is the handshake so important in the business world? Why are most meetings between diplomats ended with a handshake? Why do secret orders, fraternities, and sororities include handshakes among their secret rituals? The handshake represents an expression of equality.
Take, for example, the meeting of diplomats to discuss a peace initiative for two warring countries. With the handshake giving a sense of equality to the meeting, the playing field is levelled and the proceedings can occur, unhindered by feelings of inequality.
A person would be foolish to overlook the importance of the handshake. So, to all those business students, professors, and anyone else interested in the importance of the handshake, remember that you are being judged on your handshake whether consciously or subconsciously, so make it count. There is a lot to be learned through paying a little more attention every time you shake hands. Remember this the next time you shake a hand and pay attention, it means more than you think. As a popular bollywood movie song states:

"Mere haat mein, tera haat he..

Saari jannat-e mere saath he!"

Let Her Live

A beautiful Sunday evening at Park Street:Kolkata; we 5 friends (all guys) had just set foot hoping to enjoy a sumptuous dinner at a posh restaurant. We strolled our way to a very famous restaurant while looking at the walking angels in the form of girls at Park Street. The entrance of the restaurant was manned by a light post, a man of the size of a light post. “All guys?” He asked. “Uncle you should get an eye checkup…Do you see any girl around?” “All guys, not
allowed!” Not allowed!! Did I hear it correctly? Why not allowed? “Only family” pat came the reply. As we were contemplating, a group arrived – 5 guys, 1 girl. Welcome Sir. We were flabbergasted!! What kind of family is that?? Modern day Pandavas!!

Friends,

I didn't want that wonderful evening to turn sour;
So I tried to use my Toastmasters skills: Persuade with Power;
However I soon realized presence of a girl was actually the need of the hour.

Such incidents make me wish I was a girl!! And they say why should boys have all the fun.

To make her happy we must gift her a lappy;
If she’s feeling down one should take her to the best restaurant in the town;
If she’s upset gift her a diamond set

And then pay more taxes!! The rich becomes richer while the poor becomes poorer. This world is not for us monsieur. Man has will, but woman has her way. Fed up with pursuing women and being rebuked time and again men have started loving men now. Just a few days back, I was availing the City of Joy’s Pandora’s Box on the wheels i.e. a public bus inside which you can get anything and everything. A family boarded the bus having five kids: four boys and one girl.

And as it happens the poor boys had to stand while the girl got a seat of course by displacing another man by pointing to the sign: Ladies! One of the kids didn’t find this amusing…he started asking his father…Why are we standing and Sister is sitting? Why? He created quite a ruckus.

The youngest kid barely the size of my knees replied….”Brother there are four of us and sister is alone…so she should sit.” Everyone in the bus was extremely happy that this made the noisy kid go silent…someone even praised this young kid.

However was it really praiseworthy? Wasn’t it a slap on the face of our society? Have you ever wondered why in a public bus or a train the ratio of ladies seats or compartments to general or specifically male compartments/seats is so less? Because the simple answer is, it follows the trend of male to female ratio …. Wherever you go, whatever you do…. You will see that everywhere there is a mismatch in this ratio. When I tried to find out the reasons, the first thing
that came into my mind was: Illiteracy. And yes it is a big reason. . Various social problems have also given wind to this imbalance. Even today an unmarried girl is considered a burden for parents. In some parts of India you need to pay a hefty dowry in order to get your girl married off. In rural parts of our country, a woman is considered to be unlucky if she can’t give birth
to a boy, resulting in infanticide. In Jaipur, capital of the western state of Rajasthan, prenatal sex determination tests result in an estimated 3,500 abortions of female foetuses annually. A daughter is always a liability. “How can I bring up a second?" a mother, answered firmly when asked by a visitor how she could have taken her own child's life eight years ago. "Instead of her
suffering the way I do, I thought it was better to get rid of her." The infant girls are fed dry rice that puncture their windpipes, or are made to swallow poisonous powdered fertilizer. Others are smothered with a wet towel, strangled or allowed to starve to death. Isn’t this an appalling human rights violation??

How can we mitigate this issue? Simple. The literate people should set an example. They should teach and guard these illiterate people. But as Dan Brown said in Digital Fortress “Quis Custodiet Ipsos Custodes” – Who will guard the guards? Rich Indian families are flying to Middle East and getting a male foetus implanted for as less as five thousand INR. If you check the internet, there are a thousand websites telling you how to find out the sex of the baby. Another thousand telling you how to go for an abortion. This information hasn’t been put up by any illiterate person; well learned people have done this. And as I am speaking another thousand people are actually reading this information.

I wish I was a girl….easy to say isn’t it? Take the example of a working mother - She needs to wake up at 6am in the morning…prepare the kids for school……cook all the food…go to office…slog all day…come back home….finish the homework of the kids…..serve everyone dinner…..get the kids to sleep..And then go to sleep. Pretty easy isn’t it? Today in this forum I protest against female infanticide: the biggest curse of Independent India.

If it progresses like this, that day won’t be far when there will be only one family dining in the restaurant and a few hundred waiting outside.

The earth will become barren,
If it is devoid of women;
Let us be united as a nation,
I request you all to stop girl child annihilation.

S.O.S

Respect is a lesson that everyone should learn
Respect must be given before an expected return
Respect is something that’s given for free
Respect is about us and never about me
Respect builds the character and defines who we are
Respect sets the standard and raises the bar

These were the lines inscribed on the wall of a primary school in Coimbatore. I was visiting the school as a volunteer for social responsibility initiative on behalf of TCS. A representative from the school started introducing us to the little kids about 5 years old one by one when I spotted a little kid at the very end of the class lying with heads down. The letters SOS were written on his T-shirt. I asked the teacher "What does SOS mean?" "Sir! He is Son of a Sex Worker..Son of a Slut..SOS" When I turned back the boy had run away..

I never saw or heard from the boy again. What I do know is that little kid in that school today was being deprived of one of the very basic rights of a human being - Respect. His fault - his mother was working as a sex worker.

Slut, whore, escort, call girl - these are the various names by which a certain group of people are referred to because they do a certain job. However, they can also be called by some other names like - Mother, daughter, sister, woman, human. The sad part being the very society which rechristens them is the reason why they were rechristened in the first place. Growing poverty, increasing urbanization, and industrialization, migration, and widespread unemployment are the prevalent reasons for prostitution. A survey conducted by Indian Health Organization shows:-20% of the one lakh prostitutes are children;15% of the women in prostitution have been sold by their husbands. These hapless women are not lured into it but are thrust into it.

They are here to fulfil someone’s needs...they are here indeed to fulfill someone’s needs - someone is doing it to help an ailing family, someone is doing it to ensure her child gets a better life whereas someone is doing it to merely stay alive. And what is the society doing in return? Labelling them as outcasts. A young boy whose mother is working as a sex worker ridiculed upon and labelled as a SOS - Son of a Slut whereas a politician’s son whose parents are doing more harm to the society is labelled as a SOS - Shrine of Society? I ask who is the real SOS - Scourge of the Society?

I will tell you what is the problem - the so called society is full of hypocrites. Publicly the society will condemn prostitution but privately the same society will seek the company of one. For any business to thrive, buyers should be more than sellers. When these women sell their body, there are millions of buyers. But these women are also selling their souls, is there anyone brave enough to buy them? Sex workers do not and I repeat do not love the job that they are doing. An engineer wants his child to be an engineer, a doctor wants her child to be a doctor. A prostitute never wants her child to be a prostitute. And what do they get in return? Continuous contempt, handful of hatred, despise and disdain.

Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor won a plethora of awards for portraying the character of a sex worker in the movie “Chameli”. The critics were glowing in her praise for the bravery she showed in portraying such a difficult role. She was only acting in front of a camera for a single movie, sex workers need to act 24*7*365. Forget an award, most of them don’t even get a proper meal to eat. That my friend requires bravery. That my friends calls for respect. Not because of the job that they are doing but because of the sheer gut required to do this job.

I am not here asking everyone to join a movement to eradicate prostitution, there are countless organizations doing that. I am not here asking you for monetary contribution enabling a better life for the sex workers. I am here asking for something which only a very brave person can give - respect towards sex workers. Whenever you hear someone discussing his adventures with a sex worker - protest. Whenever you hear the word slut being used to demean any women - protest. Whenever you hear another Jiten being referred to as SOS - protest.

SOS - stands for Save our Soul. It is a distress call made hoping against hope. Today I am raising an SOS on behalf of all the SOS - Son of Sluts. The essence of a Human Being is being human. Respect the sex workers as human beings. Please.

Remember friends,

Respect is a lesson that everyone should learn
Respect must be given before an expected return
Respect is something that’s given for free
Respect is about us and never about me
Respect builds the character and defines who we are
Respect sets the standard and raises the bar

THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT

As Tom entered the pub Ryan waved at him from his chair. Tom acknowledged him and made his way up to his table. “A beer will do for me” he told the waiter and took his seat. One bottle of beer arrived and was duly dispatched, followed by another and one more. The funny thing about drinking is that people start speaking trash when they are in their senses and once they are sloshed they start speaking about the most intellectual things. Our protagonists were involved in a discussion about science. Ryan said “I watched the movie Time Machine recently. Really loved it. How cool it would be to travel back in time. I wish I could do that so that instead of wasting time with you I would be in a date.” Tom retorted “Can time machine change the fact that you were voted Mr. Ugliest in college?” Before Ryan could reply Tom decided to change the topic “However, time travel is possible only in the movies. In real life it’s just a figment of imagination.”
“Figment of imagination? What do you know about time travel?” the voice was not of Ryan's but someone else's. An old man was sitting in the next table and he was looking at their direction. “Time travel is not a figment of imagination. It has been done in the past. “Ryan and Tom were sure that this man is out of his mind and instead of arguing with him they paid their bills and left the bar. While they were leaving the bar, the man shouted on their back “It is one of the biggest cover ups in human history”. Tom looked back but Ryan dragged him away.
That night Tom couldn't sleep peacefully, the phrase Biggest Cover Up in Human history was playing repeatedly in his mind. Was it the gibberish of a sloshed man or the tip of the iceberg? He searched the internet for time travel and what he got was references of the book Time Machine only. Frustrated he gave up and went to sleep.
Next day when Tom was returning from work he found that same old man on the street. Tom walked up to him and said “Sir. Sorry about yesterday, I would love to hear your story.” The old man looked up to him and smiled “Good. And for your information it’s not a story but a real life incident. Follow me.”
Tom accompanied him inside a nearby pub and he started his story. The year was 1943. The world was in the midst of World War II. In those days going to work meant serving the army. My friend the Late John Bradley was a marine. He was one of the best and toughest men in the army. His boss was Lieutenant Steven Dempsey – head US navy operations. One day the Lt. Called up John and told him that he has been selected for a high profile mission. As per the words of the Lt. it was going to be a voyage of a lifetime. My friend the daredevil marine signed up for the mission without thinking for a second. Little did he know that it was not a mission but rather a suicide. The ship was the US Navy destroyer escort named USS Eldridge. The place was Philadelphia. The date was October the 28th. It was a crystal clear day. Around 20 marines were chosen for that mission. The Lt. delivered a motivating speech to the so called chosen ones. He told them “Gentlemen history will be kind to you because today you will write it. All the best.” The ship was surrounded by some huge structures which the unsuspecting sailors were told as fuel tanks. In reality they were electrical generators. Their purpose was to bend light around the Eldridge.
Tom was listening with his mouth gaping. The old man took a deep breath and continued, the marines boarded the ship and waited for it to sail. But instead of sailing something else happened. The so called fuel tanks closed around the ship and without any warning they were switched on. There was deafening noise around the place. The marines suddenly realised something was wrong and tried to escape the ship, but their eyesight was blocked by a blinding flash of light. The electrical generators started serving their purpose and light was starting to bend around the Eldridge. The soldiers started shouting in fear, grown up men were crying like scared babies not knowing what was happening. And then the generators reached full power. The ship was engulfed with blue light, the cries suddenly stopped. The Eldridge disappeared from sight.
There was pin drop silence in the pub where Tom and the old man were sitting. Tom realised they were the only people left in the pub. He also felt Goosebumps. “What happened next?” Tom asked. The old man sipped his beer and said “After 10 seconds the Eldridge reappeared. A call came from Virginia about 320kms away that they had spotted the Eldridge at their port. It was dismissed by the Lt. as nothing but hallucination. But in reality the Eldridge travelled back in time. This was a part of an experiment – The Philadelphia Experiment.” What happened to your friend John? When the ship returned John was found dead, his hand 10 feet away from him. Most of the crew members died, only a few survived. So why doesn’t anyone know about this experiment? Enquired Tom. Because the ones who survived were given medicines to wipe out their memory. You see young man, time travel is plausible. Saying this, the old man stood up and started walking away.
Tom was curious. Hey he shouted back. If no one knows about this, how come you know? Who are you? The old man looked back from the door, smiled at Tom and said Lieutenant Steven Dempsey wishes you and your family a merry Christmas... and he disappeared.
